Overview of Community Foundation of Merced County
The Community Foundation of Merced County (CFMC) is a publicly supported non-profit organization established to receive, invest and distribute charitable donations in our Merced County communities. The CFMC also strives to provide leadership on important community issues.
The Community Foundation of Merced County partners with donors to ensure a permanent source of charitable funds to meet the changing needs and dreams of our Merced County communities
In the fall 2003, Dennis Haines, Rob Jarvis and Mark Seivert began having conversations about Merced County lacking a vital and critical structure for keeping resources local to benefit the community. With the coming UC Merced and Merced County growing rapidly, it was time for Merced County to take the next step in creating an organization such as a Community Foundation that would connect with local donors, bring community partners to the table, elevate discussions on community issues and create plans for addressing these issues and bring resources to implement the plan.
In an effort to create a county-wide community foundation, technical assistance was requested from the League of California Foundations which suggested contacting Mick Grimes, Executive Director of the Sonora Area Foundation. Mick has provided invaluable mentoring and technical assistance to the original steering committee and later the Board of Directors of the CFMC. Mick has made several trips to Merced and presented to a group which donated the first funds which provided operating funds in which the steering committee contracted to hire a consultant, Patricia Jones (Phone 209-984-5527).
Patricia worked closely with the Board of Directors to ensure the Board was incorporating best practices in forming the community foundation organizational structure. Patricia worked with the Board to develop governance policies and procedures as well as the CFMC grant making policies and procedures, funding priorities, developing the articles of incorporation as well as other policies and procedures. Her consulting services has prepared the CFMC Board to meet standards to join the National Council on Foundations in Washington D.C., as well as the League of California Foundations.
